The sculptures explore the fragility of society – where civilisation acts as a facade concealing primordial desires lying dormant within the unconscious mind.
The pieces take inspiration from the ideas expressed in Wilhelm Reich’s The Mass Psychology of Fascism (1934), where Reich divides the human psyche into layers; the surface layer is our social conscious, while the layer below contains aggressive, sadistic and sexual urges. In the work tactile seduction is juxtaposed with repulsion, as primitive elements begin to protrude - coarse animal hairs grow through the sophisticated embroidery, while fluids seep and stain from beneath, representing uncontrollable elements permeating amongst the order and cultivation.
