WOMB III (2011)

Materials:- Metal thread, thread, felt, and stuffing
Dimensions:- Height 34cm, Width 28cm, Depth 8cm

Womb III takes inspiration of the Christian depiction of the Virgin Mary, and how this has influence the societal status of women. While the womb may physically represent a place of nurture and birth, culturally female genitalia, often creates greater unease than male genitalia, where the former represents an object of fear, symbolising an awaiting cavernous mouth or a dark, foreboding caves. The womb is lavishly embroidered using metal thread work, a technique used in ecclesiastical work for over a millennia; therefore using a high status technique on a taboo object.
