Culturally, babies symbolise innocence, hope and the future; however according to Sigmund Freud’s research into human psycho-sexual development, young children a filled with destructive and forbidden desire, such urges are later suppressed, but remain dormant within the unconscious mind. The normally reassuring persona of babies is rendered uncanny, with the addition of hair growing from unnatural places to represent its primordial desires surfacing. The old teeth placed within a young face creates an uncomfortable juxtaposition, while the dark cadaver like eyes gives the baby a skull like appearance, creating a connotation of death.
